Description

Posted in: Category: [Ueno - Tokyo]

Ameyoko is a busy market street along the Yamanote line tracks between Okachimachi and Ueno Station, the site of a black market after World War Two.

The name "Ameyoko" is a short form for "Ameya Yokocho" (candy store alley), as candies were traditionally sold there. Alternatively, "Ame" also stands for "America", because a lot of American products used to be available on the black market.

Today, various products such as clothes, bags, cosmetics, fresh fish, dried food and spices are sold along Ameyoko. Opening hours and closing days depend on individual stores, but stores typically open around 10:00 and close around 19:00. Many stores remain closed on selected Wednesdays.

Great street scene - I like the divide between the hustle and bustle of the people and the amalgamation of signs above. Seems Tokyo moves ever onwards to a Blade Runner-style cityscape.

Your lights and colors processing fits wonderfully this crowded street scene.

I like the action. Great light.
  • LightningPaul // 2009-03-10 07:53:31

Very nice! It gives a great overview of the market. The market looks old fashion but the commercials in the street are modern. I really like the second contrast: cool lights high in the street but very warm lighting at the market.

Really nice photo. Brings the scene to life wonderfully. The contrast between the yellow glow of the lower half of the image and the grey skies above seems to help make it come to life.

    The color realy nice too
